The CCB Team
Amanda
Liston, President
Amanda has been working with
animals since 2003, when her first puppy inspired her to begin
her career at boarding kennels and private veterinary practices.
In 2005, she stumbled upon The APS of Orange County (now known
as Paws4Ever)
in Mebane, NC where her passion for animal rescue, and pit
bulls, was born. Amanda organized the first Pit Bull Awareness Day event for the group in 2007, raising money for Paws4Ever’s Pit-Bull Spay/Neuter Campaign, which offers low-cost spay/neuter for the community’s pit bulls. In 2008, Amanda developed a dog training class for bully breeds and their owners, which included an educational session on responsible pit bull ownership. The class quickly gained popularity and Amanda & Terry continued to teach quarterly sessions until 2010. Today Amanda is a part-time veterinary assistant at the low-cost spay/neuter clinic at Paws4Ever, but focuses most of her time and energy on CCB. She and Terry live in Hillsborough with their 4 pit bulls and 2 chihuahuas.
Terry
King, Vice-President
After over 17 years of working
in a factory, Terry King found himself without a job—or many
options. He decided to follow his dream of working with animals,
bouncing from a boarding kennel, to a 24-hour emergency
hospital, finally landing at The Humane Society of the
Piedmont’s low–cost spay/neuter clinic. Being there allowed
Terry to be a part of decreasing pet overpopulation, a cause he
truly believed was the answer to the future of ending companion
animal’s suffering. After volunteering for Paws4Ever’s Pit Bull
Awareness Day event in October 2008, he participated in Amanda’s
bully breed class by training a shelter pit bull. After the
positive experience with his canine partner Onyx, Terry’s goal
became to save our community’s pit bulls from certain death at
many of our animal shelters. Terry and Amanda's rescue and
eventual adoption of "Spiderman" (pictured with Terry) was the
inspiration for making a passion for pit bull rescue into
something of their own.

Valerie Fernandez
Valerie has had a passion for animals for as long as she can remember. Her love for pit bulls began when she adopted her first pit bull puppy, Mia. Valerie fell in love with the breed and has been committed to helping people change their views of the breed she loves. Valerie was one of CCB's first adopters, adding Duke to her family in September 2009. She was one of the original CCB board members; and her talent for organizing, creativity, and planning made her a natural choice for her part in CCB's vision. Valerie is a Montessori teacher in Raleigh, a profession that suits her open-mindedness and contemporary flair. This has proved to be a valuable asset to the CCB team as well!
Jennifer
Turner, Graphic Design Coordinator
Jen Turner is an Interior Designer for a
commercial architect. She lives in Burlington with her husband and three
dogs: "Daisy”, a Labrador; "Lily", a pit bull lab mix; and "Cooper", a Pit
Bull. She also has a cat, "Sweet Pea"; and five chickens. At first Jen was
leery about pit bulls. She rescued her first pit bull mix about 2 1/2 years
ago. Jen and her husband were considering a friend for Daisy when we heard
that a black 8 week lab puppy was found on the side of a busy highway by a
coworker. When Jen went to meet the puppy she noticed it had an energetic
spirit and a cute white patch on its chest and a bully wobble in its back
legs. That night she did some research about pit bulls and discovered her
new puppy was most likely a pit bull mix. In March 2010, they were
considering the idea of a third dog. Jen ran across a few sites that
eventually led her to Carolina Care Bullies. She read about their
organization and became a fan on Facebook. Her husband also joined, and fell
in love with Buckley Von Piggles, however he was soon adopted. Jen continued
to keep tabs on all of the adoptables from CCB and finally decided to
volunteer. Her first event was the dog wash at Unleashed. Amanda L, Terry,
Valerie, Amanda B. and the other volunteers were very warm and welcoming to
Jen, so she decided this was an organization she wanted to continue to
volunteer for. One evening, after returning from volunteering at another
event, Jen mentioned to Amanda L that she had a passion for graphic design.
Soon after, Amanda contacted her to create an event poster and she has been
helping out in that area ever since. Her newest addition is Cooper, that
they adopted from a shelter in Georgia. She could not imagine life without
her fur babies and Carolina Care Bullies.
Triad
CCB
Meredith Denny, Triad Director & Foster Coordinator
Meredith decided to get her own dog in 2009, bravely choosing Ollie, a pit bull mix, as her first dog. While searching for training resources on the internet, Meredith came across Carolina Care Bullies. In August 2010, her family felt they were ready for fostering, and began with Robyn and Mosby (formerly Rigby). After several months as a dedicated volunteer, Meredith agreed to be the Foster Coordinator for CCB, taking on managing the foster program. You can see Meredith at many of the CCB events along with her daughter, Jessi, the self proclaimed “puppy spokesperson”. Jessi helps educate the public about what great dogs and how misunderstood they are. CCB is honored to have Meredith and Jessi on our team!
Vicky
Smith, Triad Co-Director
Vicky has always loved animals, her family never without a small lap dog. In
1996, Vicky married her husband Robert, who had a love for pit bulls, a
sentiment Vicky did not share! The media hype had overtaken her view of the
breed. In August 2009, Vicky got the opportunity to meet a friend’s pit
bull, and what she saw was a dog who didn’t seem like what she’d heard about
on the news. Vicky surprised Robert by telling him it was time to add a pit
bull to their family. Vicky started soaking up all the information she could
on the breed, and added Nayla to their pack in October 2009. Vicky’s life
was forever changed, and soon after she found Carolina Care Bullies. Vicky
fostered a couple special bullies for CCB until she finally “foster-failed”
Maggie May in November 2010!
Susan Johnson, Media Coordinator
By profession, Susan is a Radiation Therapist. This means she treats cancer patients with radiation. Her job is very rewarding. Seeing the patients feel better and live long cancer-free lives is awesome.
Susan admits that her first response to her youngest son wanting to get a pit bull was a very firm no. This was followed by you’re not bringing one of those “mean” dogs in my house. Well like most kids he went and got the puppy anyway. Her name is Jade. When Jade joined Susan’s family, it was love at first sight. Jade was so sweet and loving, that Susan began to research the breed, only to find out how badly they were treated and what a bad reputation pit bulls had. Susan began to sponsor pit bulls at an out of state rescue to try and make a difference in the lives of some of the dogs. When Susan’s 11yr old poodle passed away she decided she needed “her” dog. Susan finally talked her husband into letting her rescue a pit bull. She began to research rescues in NC. She wanted to rescue a Katrina dog. While she was searching she saw this black one on the website. He was pretty but not a Katrina dog. Susan kept looking only to find that the black dog was no longer on pet finder. Susan began to really worry about him because there was no happy ending story posted for him. She emailed the rescue only to find out that he had had a bad adoption and the person who adopted him said he growled at her. At this point Susan was in tears when her husband called. Being the nice man he is, he told Susan to make arrangements to get him the upcoming weekend. Well it was love at first sight again. This time it was with Buddy. Susan rescued Buddy in Jan 2005.
After getting Buddy, she wanted to volunteer with a pit bull rescue. After seeing CCB on Facebook and they were within driving distance, she decided to just do it.
Susan began setting up for events and later became a foster. Her first foster was Roxxy and then Gizmo. After both her fosters were adopted she rescued a small red starving female pit bull who was a stray in Guilford county. Her name is Hope.
Let’s just say everyday at Susan’s house is a doggie zoo. There is Haley a 10yr old Lab, Jade a 9yr old white pittie, Buddy an 8 yr old black pittie, Hope a 1 ½ yr old red pittie, Molly a 3 ½ yr old border collie mix and Lady a 14yr old Lab mix.
Susan is very glad to be a part of the CCB team. When there is interest in a pittie at an event it just makes her day, especially when the adoption is final. She looks forward to working with CCB to rescue as many of NC’s shelter dogs as possible
